Mr. Laarayedh, 57, speaking in his office at a considerable distance above the cells, argued that his grueling prison experiences make him a better minister, sensitive to the abuse of power and the need for not just Tunisia, but all Arab states, to bend their omnipotent secret police to the rule of law.
She says she does it for you: I'm reclaiming my Dominican heritage (which ain't a complete lie — she's even taking Spanish to better minister to your mom), and when you see her on the street, flaunting, flaunting, you know exactly what every nigger that walks by is thinking.
But is it better that ministers subcontract decisions to unaccountable quangos, or that they exercise judgement?
It has been mistaken by people who ought to know better, including ministers, as a means of dealing with a different problem: flooding.
Better still, ministers extracted from Pfizer a pledge to complete a research campus in Cambridge and to keep a fifth of the combined company's research workforce in Britain (see article).This confidence quickly dissolved.
"Heads know their schools better than ministers, so it's rightly down to them whether or not they choose to use CCTV, although great care needs to be taken to protect the privacy of pupils," says the minister.
Alison Lines, a School Home Support worker in Barking and Dagenham, in east London, says that schools understand far better than ministers why a tough stance on truancy often will not work.
Lord O'Donnell, formerly Britain's top civil servant, said it would be better if ministers spent their time implementing policy that had already been announced rather than changing too much in the last 10 months before the election.
"I think for the sake of the country, party and quality of debate it would be much better if ministers have freedom to speak their mind on the EU issue," he said.
The controversy was about a garbled account of the First Minister's views on whether David Cameron or Ed Miliband would make the better Prime Minister.
