Considering that the association between bereavement by suicide and suicide in bereaved siblings is the strongest observed in this study, it could also reflect the 'copycat phenomenon' that is, suicides in bereaved siblings could be caused by imitation of suicidal behaviour.
A more recent study in Scotland, with 14,630 bereaved subjects, found the strongest association between bereavement and mortality in those without self-reported limited illness (8).
Hierarchical multiple regression analysis were conducted for the family-bereaved between T1 and T4, to determine if functioning [internalizing or externalizing problems, family functioning, number of family bereavements (life time)] prior to bereavement predict internalizing or externalizing problems after bereavement while controlling for gender and SES.

I agree with Allen Frances ("Good Grief," Op-Ed, Aug. 15), who makes a distinction between bereavement and depression, and who also discusses the prospect of overdiagnosing and overtreating people going through the normal stages of grief.
"A timely diagnosis of this possible association between bereavement and [atrial fibrillation] could change the outcome of the condition," he said. .

We did not find a strong link between bereavement and diabetes when the death was non-traumatic or that of a grandparent or maternal sibling, suggesting that only the most severe stress exposures have a programming effect.
