Extracting money from your home could impact upon many aspects of your finances, from your eligibility to means-tested benefits to the value of your estate when you die.
Economic evaluation typically seeks to express inputs and outputs in monetary terms, in order to calculate a net present value, or return on investment (value of benefits relative to value of costs) of the future stream of benefits and costs, known as a cost benefit analysis.
There are theoretical and normative arguments for using general population values as opposed to patient values [ 3- 5], and national guidelines in multiple jurisdictions require health benefits to be valued in a manner that reflects societal preferences [ 6- 8].
Phillips et al. have done considerable work in this area (particularly for corporate events), including systematically categorizing benefits both 'tangible' and 'intangible' and costs, and converting benefits to monetary values (Phillips and Breining 2007).
The dust-up underscored the difficulty of any move to overhaul the tax code: Those who have an existing benefit tend to value it more — and be more vocal — than the future beneficiaries of a political promise.

But, while Silicon Valley's innovations have brought enormous benefits to society, the value of Wall Street's innovations seems a lot less clear.
