Ninomiya (1975) showed that during the cold period of February 23 27 , 1974 cold and dry advection dominated and was almost balanced with the eddy heat supply from the sea, which was confined below the 850 hPa level.
In several other locations within the belt, pyroclastic units contain sulfide clasts that may have been derived from yet to be discovered coeval massive sulfide deposits at or below the sea floor, which enhances the exploration potential of these pyroclastic units and demonstrates the need for volcanic facies analysis in exploration.
The focal mechanisms obtained from our OBS observations showed that trench-normal tensional stresses within the subducting Pacific plate extend to a depth of at least about 30 km or even 35 km below the sea surface, which corresponds to 25 km below the top of the oceanic crust, considering the depth range of the active seismicity (Figure 2c,d).
