"Until yesterday, the company believed the process was working and was completely observed," Kenneth Marks, a lawyer for Enron, said today.
"While we believed the process was best served through a stay, we were prepared to move ahead with getting the remaining issues in the case resolved while we await word on Supreme Court review," he said.
Donald L. Fowler, a former Democratic national chairman, said he believed the process should have started later so that the nominee would be exposed for less time to the $150 million Republican advertising campaign before the convention in July.
But he was also a sharp critic of liberalism who believed the process would end in an "organic" way of life – a "scientific" version of the medieval social order that, despite his hostility to traditional religion, he much admired.
Once he became a Nobel recipient, he wasted no time in letting the Royal Swedish Academy know that he believed the process for granting the prize was badly flawed.
The Labour MP Simon Danczuk, who led calls for a public inquiry into child abuse, said he had "confidence" in the selection process and believed the process was now going in the "right direction".
