There are reports of side shifts being significantly more common in chronic than in episodic CH.
A strong association was noted between the distribution of HCV genotypes and IL28B SNP variants (P<0.0001 for rs12979860 and rs12980275, and P = 0.01 for rs8099917, Chi squared test; Table 1) with the favorable CC at rs12979860, AA at rs12980275, and TT at rs8099917 being significantly more common in patients with HCV genotype 2 or 3 infection than genotype 1 (Figure 1).
For women, again there was greater reporting of symptoms amongst the Moscow group, with two symptoms, difficulty in concentrating and an aggregate category of other symptoms, being significantly more common.
In the InI naive group no major integrase drug resistance mutations have been observed, but in 30 (38.5%) cases polymorphic variation with minimal influence on integrase inhibitor susceptibility was found, being significantly more common among subtype B sequences (26 cases, 54.2%) than non-B ones (5 cases, 16.7%), p=0.00099, OR: 5.91 (95% CI 1.77-22.63).
This study specifically demonstrated that a mutation in codon 160 encoding a change from Ser (Ser160) to Asn/Thr (160Asn/Thr) in the P. falciparum ap2-mu gene was a modulator of in vivo responses to artemisinin derivatives in Kenyan malaria patients, being significantly more common among submicroscopic parasites surviving combination treatment at day 3 than in the pretreatment population.
Skin and soft tissue was the most common site of infection in both groups, being significantly more common in the PVL + ve compared to the PVL-ve group (81.6% vs 63.5%, p < 0.001), and abscesses accounted for a larger percentage of these infections in the PVL + ve group versus controls (87.0% compared to 41.5% respectively, p < 0.001).
