Learning and cultural transmission of behaviours has been reported widely in cetaceans [see 20], with some authors suggesting that a combination of both cultural and genetic transmission can occur [11].
The relative importance of positive and negative beliefs in individuals' decisions to seek medical help or engage in cancer prevention behaviours has not been explored directly.
This study examines the content of newspaper articles covering her illness to consider whether 'mobilising information' which could encourage women to adopt risk-reducing and health promoting behaviours has been included.
Anxiety about health may be associated with a spectrum of symptoms, such as nausea and fatigue, but a characteristic pattern of beliefs, concerns and behaviours has also been described, which is distinct from general anxiety (Forester et al, 1993; Lucock and Morley, 1996; Cameron et al, 1998).
