Process evaluation [ 76] will be used to gain insight into the response rate of the target population (reach), behaviour changes, implementation, fidelity (the extent to which the intervention was delivered as planned), delivered dose (the amount of the intervention actually delivered) and participants perceptions (satisfaction).
In follow-up research the effects of specific techniques on the intended, and actual, behaviour change and implementation phases might be assessed.
It explores local newborn care practices and beliefs, analyses their harmful or beneficial characteristics and elucidates areas of potential resistance to behaviour change and implementation of the essential newborn care package.
As such, interventions to enhance the quality and safety of health care may be more effective when developed by those with local 'expertise' and tacit knowledge [ 5- 7], and underpinned by evidence from behaviour change and implementation science literature [ 8- 11].

This Theoretical Domains Framework Implementation TDFII) approach [ 15, 16] involves a six step process for behaviour change: forming an implementation team; defining a locally relevant target behaviour; understanding barriers to performing the target behaviour; devising intervention strategies to address identified barriers; intervention implementation; and evaluation.
The IMB model proposes an intervention development process involving (1) elicitation of client resources and needs and, (2) matching intervention content to existing need and behaviour change objectives, (3) implementation of information, motivation and skill development techniques interventions according to protocol and, finally, (4) evaluation.
