Ignoring the fact that Republicans have fought on behalf of big mine owners for years to weaken mine safety oversight, Dowd actually had the gall to say that the mine disaster in West Virginia was an example of how "Washington doesn't work".
Mr. Smith, a doctor and a crusader on behalf of land mine victims, would campaign for the seat being vacated by Representative Rod R. Blagojevich, a Democrat who is leaving Congress to run for governor of Illinois, the newspaper reported.
His opponent in the primary is a state senator, Randy Hultgren, who claimed in one of his mailers that Hastert's law firm "lobbies on behalf of foreign mining companies with... a history of human trafficking".
"What this says loud and clear is that it is important for resources-sector companies to be able to offer accommodation options," said Michael Roche, chief executive of the Queensland Resource Council, which lobbies on behalf of coal mining.
"This destruction on behalf of big mining companies like Adani will be paid for by the state Labor government at the expense of Queensland taxpayers," Greens deputy leader, Larissa Waters, said.
