"beginning of the eclipse" is a grammatically correct and usable phrase in written English.
It can be used to describe the start or initial phase of an eclipse, which is when the moon first begins to pass in front of the sun. Example: "We eagerly awaited the beginning of the eclipse, watching as the moon slowly covered more and more of the sun's bright surface."
The path of totality will sweep across only two land areas, southern Africa near the beginning of the eclipse and sparsely populated south-central Australia near sunset.
