In June and September 2009, we mapped the current location and condition of ORV trails along a 2 km straight-line segment of the Tanada Lake Trail beginning at the trailhead located at mile 24.0 of Nabesna Road.
Most climbers, technical and nontechnical, begin at the eastern trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park, where there is the usual trail register, a map and signs encouraging visitors to stay on the trail, which is bordered by rock and sawn logs.
IF YOU GO You Don't Have to Walk It All FOR an ideal short hike, suitable for a day trip (with longer options), begin at the Bunker Hill trailhead leading to Lion's Head, a rocky outcropping (elevation 1,738 feet) that overlooks the town of Salisbury and affords panoramic views.

IF YOU GO ACCESS From the east, most backpackers begin at a trailhead parking lot on Prediger Road, off Platte Clove Mountain Road a few miles west of West Saugerties, N.Y.
Remember that it can be 70 degrees at the trailhead but windy below freezing at the top.
In 1957, 23 years before WRST was established, the Tanada Lake Trail began at the contemporary location (although no trailhead pullout was yet present) and a single, relatively straight track could be distinguished with a very intermittent, parallel trail observed about 50 m downslope (Fig. 4b).
