The sheer variety of terms – best by, best before, sell by, use by, use or freeze by, to name a few – is boggling.

Labels such as "best by," "use before," "sell by" and "expires on" can be confusing.

Faced with a panoply of product life terms – "use by", "display until", "sell by", "best before" and so on – shoppers are unsure when a product is or isn't OK to eat.

"Most stores, in fact, pull items 2 to 3 days before the sell-by date," the NRDC report observes.

The proposed plans under the scheme include: scrapping best before and limiting sell by labels on food, creating new food packaging sizes, constructing more "on-the-go" recycling points and unveiling five flagship anaerobic digestion plants.

And at the retail stage, U.S. supermarkets, which routinely overstock the shelves to produce that look of abundance, throw away 30 million pounds of food daily before its "sell by" date.

Learn the difference between "best before" and "sell by" would be a start; the former is merely an indication that food does not remain in tip-top condition for ever, the latter a warning that should be taken more seriously, though not very seriously in my case.

With "best before" or "sell by" things are more flexible.

When you're checking your product(s) for the expiration date, look for Use By/Best By/Best Before, not Sell By.
