Recently, DNA rearrangements in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene have been described with increasing frequency.
During the past decade, nosocomial outbreaks of Acinetobacter baumannii have been described with increasing frequency, occurring mostly in intensive care units, burn units, and surgical wards (1, 2 ).

The mechanism underlying this phenomenon is unknown, but since the studies of Dogiel and Ramón y Cajal in the 19th century, the existence of sympathetic bundles surrounding sensory neurons in normal animals has been described, with increased sprouting seen following neuronal damage (McLachlan et al., 1993, Ramer and Bisby, 1998b).
Iatrogenic skin and soft tissue infections by rapidly growing mycobacteria are described with increasing frequency, especially among immunocompromised patients.
AIHA can be primary or secondary to lymphoproliferative syndromes, infections, immunodeficiency, and tumors and is described with increasing frequency following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
