Wax is also the primary source of the much lower bee residues of the other major hive miticide, coumaphos, as indicated by the highly significant correlation of wax and bee contents (wax coumaphos = 54.2 bee coumaphos +1383 ppb; r2 = 0.484, p = 0.0015, n = 58) compared to the non-significant correlation of pollen and bee residues (r2 = 0.00585, p = 0.630, n = 42).

That the bee content for the latter lipophilic fungicide was much less (221 times on average) than beebread food (Table 4) from the same colonies indicates that metabolism of the parent pesticide is occurring in the bee.

This can be done by, for example, cloning amplified PCR products into plasmids and sequencing a subset of clones [ 8, 9] or sequencing pollen grains of interest [ 10, 11] or bee crop contents directly [ 12].

The identification of these plant genera may be explained by (1) spurious false-positive BLAST alignments; (2) bees regurgitating honey stomach contents, which could contain stored honey or particles from bee bread collected and stored in the colony for months (Vasquez and Olofsson, 2009); or (3) contact between pollen foragers and stored bee bread within the hive prior to foraging.

Most fungicide contents in bee-collected pollen were due to chlorothalonil (pollen fungicides = 0.9975 pollen chlorothalonil +8.2 ppb; r2 = 0.9991, p = 0.000, n = 45; Fig. 2a) as were the fungicide residues of comb wax (wax fungicides = 0.9999 wax chlorothalonil +49 ppb; r2 = 0.9966, p = 0.0162, n = 58; Fig. 2b).

In the same conditions of thermal treatment, Apis mellifera honey presented higher 5-HMF content than stingless bee honey.

Results suggest that a high temperature related to briefer thermal treatment could be an efficient way to extend shelf life without affecting 5-HMF content in stingless bee honey.

To distinguish between these hypotheses, the crop contents of several bees were examined immediately after they visited a feeder during the highest temperature condition (33°C ambient and 38°C warm feeder) to determine the extent to which they imbibed the fluid.

When Apis mellifera honey (eucalyptus) and stingless bees honey were compared, the former had higher phenolic and flavonoid contents than the stingless bees' honey, which in turn had the higher antioxidant activity [ 34].
