Different persons need different information to know because they know differently.
Bill was addressing a belief system -- one which admittedly is very different from the beliefs we promote here in America -- while Ben was addressing the people who hold those beliefs, either because they know no different, or because they are afraid or not allowed to object, or because they genuinely find truth in the ideas.
"Some of the parents are scared to send their kids to school because they know they look different with the head scarf.
People like Weisberg, Gladwell argued, are the unknown hubs around which the rest of us spin: because they know so many different kinds of people, "they spread ideas and information.

The really interesting part of this tendency to dismiss is that people can refuse to even try something different because they "know better". It's as though having formed their own thoughts on the matter, they come across as saying, essentially, "Don't confuse me with the facts; my mind is made up". Like CryptoKnight said, "I like my excuses.
Perhaps more customers will start buying the same conversion on, say, Xbox 360, Wii and PSP because they know each one will be entirely different.
