Possibly persons who are in occupations that have been associated with LD and who are aware of their potential risk for the disease are more likely to seek medical attention for suspected LD symptoms, and their physicians may be more likely to report them as LD cases because of the perceived occupational risk.
Medical screening in the workplace differs from medical screening in the general population because of the specific nature of the occupational condition and responsibilities of employers (Halperin et al. 1986; Harber et al. 2003).
