Respondents were also asked whether they felt that it was a "bigger problem" that African Americans and Latinos were "losing out because of preference for whites" or that whites were losing out because of preferences for these groups.
Among women reporting that the last pregnancy was unwanted, it is not known whether their use of a short-acting, less effective method was because of preference for such methods or because of the limited availability of longer-acting, more effective methods.
In response to this poll question — "Which of these do you think is the bigger problem in this country: blacks and Hispanics losing out because of preferences for whites, or whites losing out because of preferences for blacks and Hispanics?" — rural whites are 14 points less likely than urban whites to say they are more concerned about blacks and Hispanics losing out.
And by a more than 3-to-1 margin, rural Trump voters say whites losing out because of preferences for blacks and Hispanics is a bigger national problem than racial minorities losing out to whites.
But attitudes were reversed among registered voters who supported Trump against Clinton, with 44percentt saying whites losing out because of preferences for blacks and Hispanics was the bigger problem, more than twice as said the opposite (16percentt).
At the same time, many people who felt that white Americans were losing out because of preferences for others felt that they were comfortable financially, or that they were moving up.
Among those GOP-leaning voters who said that it was a bigger problem that the other groups were losing out because of preferences for whites or who said that it was a problem for both groups or for neither group, just 25percentt supported Trump.
While 28percentt of the public overall said whites losing out because of preferences for blacks and Hispanics was a bigger national problem, that rose to 35percentt among those who "approve somewhat" of Trump's performance and 46percentt among those who strongly approve.
Differences in monetary returns explain little of the ability sorting across majors; virtually all ability sorting is because of preferences for particular majors in college and the workplace, with the former being larger than the latter.
Fourth, because of variations in culture, demographics and allocation of resource systems resulting in large variations in admission policy, because of preferences for life-sustaining therapies and because of decisions to withhold such therapies and do-not-resuscitate orders, the results were difficult to generalize.
However, in many countries, mainly in South and East Asia, the sex ratio deviates from this norm because of the tradition of preference for sons.
