It was a Games hailed as a moment of hope for humanity – a hope soon to be let down by the Great War – although it only came to England at the last minute because of a volcano in Italy.
This mountain (at that time having an elevation of 1,745 metres, or 5,725 feet) lacked the classic conical shape of a volcano because erosion had carved its summit into a ragged ridge with steep jungle-covered slopes, and there was no written record of any eruptions.
There may indeed be the threat of a volcano erupting in Iceland – that's because it has many volcanoes, some of which erupt frequently.
Although Stone and Parker acknowledged that a volcano could not actually erupt in this Colorado town, they felt they were entitled to create the episode anyway because the Volcano film was set in Los Angeles; Stone said, "If they could do it, we could".

Researchers think the Tamu Massif is a single volcano because rock samples (labeled dots) have similar chemistry, and seismic surveys show that broad layers of rock emanate from the center of the feature.
