After the first major resort — the Moana Hotel, now the Moana Surfrider — opened in 1901, organized beach service began on Waikiki.
"I could probably get a vehicle permit and bring the papers by truck along the beach service road," Mr. McDowell said, "but Fire Island is a water experience".
Beach service is available, and there are cushioned lounge chairs, umbrellas, and hammocks as well.
There is no beach service, but a beverage cart drives up and down the beach delivering refreshments.
The hotel's other amenities include a pretty outdoor pool, beach service, a fine-dining restaurant and bar, elegant spa, and rooftop hydrotherapy pool.
