The soil root zone, especially the rhizosphere, is the active zone of microbial and root activity (Lagos et al. 2015).
The model predictions indicate that the 2 m depth is the active zone where soil deformations are governed by change in atmospheric conditions.
To clarify this point, we added the following text: "Note that the adherens junctions are located on average 250 – 350 nm from the dense projection, but in acetylcholine neurons the arrangement is asymmetric –the active zone facing the muscle can be up to ∼1000 nm.
