"The thing with drugs is that there are no places where they are distributed the same way," Julie Soleil, director of Montreal's Group for Research and Psychosocial Intervention (GRIP) told VICE.
If Wolbachia is distributed the same way in Cx. quinquefasciatus, then Wolbachia may not be present to inhibit infection in the midgut epithelial cells where viral infection begins (assuming that the mechanism of Wolbachia-induced resistance is cell autonomous), resulting in the overall rate of viral infection being independent of the presence or absence of Wolbachia.
One of the biggest UK offsetters, Climate Care, which is used by the Guardian, distributed 10,000 energy-efficient lightbulbs in a South African township; offered the carbon reductions as offsets; and then discovered that an energy company was distributing the same kind of lightbulbs free to masses of customers, including their township, so the reduction would have happened anyway.
