This survey reveals that approximately 50% of males and 30% of females were current drinkers of alcohol (MOR 3.6), confirming the findings of the 2009 STEPS (Additional file 2: Table S2) [ 13].
In particular, they were less likely to be current drinkers.
Of all adults, 45.8percentt were lifetime abstainers (55.6percentt of female adults and 36.0percentt of male adults), 13.6 percent were former drinkers (13.1percentt of female adults and 14.1percentt of male adults), and 40.6percentt were current drinkers (31.3percentt of female adults and 49.9percentt of male adults).
The same survey also found that approximately 57.4percentt of males aged 12 or older were current drinkers, compared with 46.5percentt of females of the same age range (SAMHSA 2011).
In the UK in 2009 the average adult per capita consumption was 12.5 litres (l), the same as the EU (12.5 l), 89.3% of women and 91.3% of men were current drinkers (people who consumed alcohol in the past year) [ 8], and 8.9% of women and 15.5% of men were heavy drinkers [ 8].

In the USA, ∼63% of the population are current drinkers (NIAAA, 2004), compared to ∼87% in Sweden (Bergman and Källmén, 2002).
