I remember this view being advanced in 1985 about auto competition: supposedly though the Japanese might be able to made cheap runabouts, they would somehow forever, as a preordained law of nature (was it something to do with genetics?), be incapable of making cars to compete with the Lincoln or Cadillac brands.
