While the Supreme Court often seems to decide major labor cases on the basis of partisan politics, Missouri's Tuesday election is the latest evidence that when the choice is given directly to the American people, unions win.
On January 24th, the American Library Association issued a condemnation of Arizona's "suppression of open inquiry and free expression caused by closure of ethnic and cultural studies programs on the basis of partisan or doctrinal disapproval," and the Tucson school district's "restriction of access to educational materials associated with ethnic and cultural studies programs".
Those races are the part of the election left to blood relatives and close friends, to people who like the sound of one unknown name over another and to the people who vote on the basis of partisan flag.
That's just normal, run-of-the-mill partisan antipathy.
When Congress has admitted states in the past, it's been with a similar sense of balance, whether between free and slaves states in the antebellum period or, more recently, on the basis of partisan considerations.
Electors, chosen by state legislatures mostly on the basis of partisan inclination, were not expected to exercise independent judgment when voting.
