The galaxin-like proteins, with their two distinct domains, may combine the functions of two distinct classes of mollusc proteins – the acidic proteins that are thought to actively control mineralisation, and basic proteins that either bind bicarbonate or form links with the organic matrix.
The identification of the Basic PentaCysteine (BPC) proteins that bind GA repeats, or possibly purine-rich sequences, and the presence of multiple GA repeats within the POS9 region suggest a potential binding of the BPC proteins to affect P-INO expression [ 12, 25].
