We report the crystal structures of RNase T from Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which show that this enzyme adopts an opposing dimeric arrangement, with the catalytic DEDD residues from one monomer closely juxtaposed with a large basic patch on the other monomer.
As previously proposed [14], the acidic cluster E62-65 of Nef could participate by binding to a basic patch on the μ subunit; μ1 is predicted to be a highly basic protein and its C-terminal two-thirds contains numerous positive charge clusters that could interact electrostatically with the Nef acidic cluster.
Last, when we looked at an electrostatic surface rendering of the kinase, we observed a large basic patch on the opposite side of the ATP binding site.
(B ) The stromal electrostatic surface of PSI-LHCI showing the putative ferredoxin binding site as a basic patch on the left side of the stromal ridge.
The C-terminal domain (Dot1) harbors the catalytic activity and the acidic patch that binds to the basic patch on the tail of histone H4 [ 26, 27, 52].
One notable exception is Asp175, which had been anticipated to bind to a basic patch on the surface of the α subunit.

Of note, the basic patches on the surface of RING1B/BMI1, which have been shown to be involved in DNA binding of the E3-UbcH5 conplex onucleosomeses (Bentley et al., 2011), are conserved in BRCA1, but not in BARD1.
A surface charge potential analysis of the L1 motif reveals a linear basic patch on one face of the motif (Figure 2C).
In contrast to the Nef acidic cluster, which could potentially bind a basic patch on μ1, the substantial decrease in binding caused by the P78A mutation has no obvious structural explanation at this time.
The F1 association would bring the whole talin head closer to the membrane, facilitating interactions between the basic patch on F2 and F3 and acidic membrane phospholipids.
A conserved basic patch on Ran is involved in the interaction with known Ran-binding proteins (Nilsson et al., 2001).
