For mortality due to respiratory diseases, we find elevated SMRs for manual workers in the asbestos industry, construction industry, basic metals manufacturing industry, metal products manufacturing industry, railroad industry and the shipping industry.
Results indicate significant excess in asbestos-related mortality in the asbestos industry and in seven of the selected industries, those being, the chemical industry, construction industry, electrical generation and distribution industry, basic metals manufacturing industry, metal products manufacturing industry, railroad industry and the shipping industry.
Interestingly, most of these industries- e.g., Basic Metals and Fabricated Products, Plastic and Rubber Products, Textiles and Apparel, etc.- are ancillary to the construction sector.
Business service sectors (e.g., transportation, research, commerce, and finance and insurance), mining sectors, utility sectors (electricity), and basic products manufacturing sectors (e.g., petroleum refinery and petrochemical basic products, coal products, and metal products) are located at the bottom positions.
Excess risks in asbestos-related mortality are also found in the chemical industry, the construction industry, the electrical generation and distribution industry, the basic metals manufacturing industry, the metal products manufacturing industry, the railroad industry, and the shipping industry.
