Indicators (Table 1) for data analysis were calculated according to definitions of indicators and basic health data (Indicadores e Dados Básicos – Brasil – 2007; http://tabnet.datasus.gov.br/cgi/idb2007/matriz.htm) of the Inter-Agency Health isformation Network, whicomposedmpofed of government agencies and institutions of higher education and research (11 ).

HMIS reporting is a passive surveillance system, which includes such limitations such as under-reporting; potential unreliability because of dependence on basic health staff for data collection, and incompleteness of data due to underutilization and difficulties of accessing health services in some rural areas.
