Certain military service characteristics differed by whether diabetes developed, including separation from military service since baseline, deployment without combat exposure, and active duty as opposed to Reserve/National Guard status (Table 1).
Deployment variables were measured immediately after return from deployment and included: deployment experiences (from the Deployment Risk and Resilience [DRRI] Aftermath of Battle subscale) [ 19], combat experiences (from the DRRI Combat Experiences subscale) [ 19], unit cohesion [ 24], PTSD symptoms [ 25, 26] and physical symptoms [ 22].

Statistically significant associations remained only with the following exposures: two deployments since baseline, separation from service, panic disorder, other anxiety disorder, and PTSD at baseline.
