Previous predictions of future numbers of mesothelioma deaths in Britain were based on observed male deaths between 1968 and 1991 (Peto et al, 1995; Hodgson et al, 1997) and were derived from a simple birth cohort model in which mesothelioma risk was related independently to age and to date of birth.
In our analysis, excess cancer deaths were calculated for each cohort based on observed minus expected deaths, the latter based on national/regional age- and sex-specific rates.
*Excess death estimates are based on observed mortality rates during pandemic weeks occurring in excess of background mortality rates derived from a seasonal regression model.
We estimate an intra-cluster correlation coefficient of between 0.02 and 0.05 [ 32] and a conservative average of 30 deaths per hospital per year based on observed mortality statistics, taking into consideration the non-included deceased patients.
The estimated numbers of deaths attributable to daily mean, maximum, and minimum temperatures during June August 2020 2037 based on the 32 DT-corrected simulations are presented in Figure 1, along with estimated numbers of deaths attributable to temperatures during 1990 2007 based on observed and DT-corrected simulated temperatures.
The model parameters were estimated iteratively, and the deviance (based on observed and expected numbers aggregated over 5-year groups by age, date of birth and year of death) was used to assess overall goodness of fit.
He distilled them into a mode of chaste abstraction based on observed fact: details of architecture, happenstances of light and shadow.
"The fact of the matter is, these numbers fluctuate based on observed violations," he said.
"They are a useful tool in supporting our capacity management policies as they take into account future demographics and make assumptions about how custody rates and average custodial sentence lengths could change based on observed trends.
