The study was based on two community surveys conducted in the District of Manhiça, a rural area located 80 km from the capital of Mozambique, Maputo.

The community wide data are based on four Syracuse hospitals.
The selection of the members in each group was to be based on two main criteria: community representatives should be literate (able to read and write) and they should not be occupied with other engagements that would jeopardize their participation in the district planning and priority-setting processes.
