Overall, the major clades are in large agreement with previous studies based on fewer genomes and single genes, such as 16S rRNA or parts thereof [ 18- 21].
This relationship has been found also in previous studies based on fewer, but partly the same, loci [ 11, 14, 18, 23].
This corroborates previous results, based on fewer species, that giant lobelias are closely related and are ultimately derived from herbaceous ancestors [ 7, 18, 21] but contradicts some earlier suggestions the giant habit would be plesiomorphic in the family [ 6].
This observation is consistent with the previous observation based on fewer genes mainly from D. melanogaster [e.g., [ 8, 9]] and is now shown to be more general for the genus Drosophila.
