Several authors have argued that this in fact is arbitrary (see Jann (2008)), and I report results based on both the male coefficients as reference, as well as those based on a pooled regression of males and females, as suggested by Neumark (1988), as a robustness check.
Another caveat is that the value of a general pattern based on a pooled analysis is dictated by the diversity of the representative groups.
