The phrase "barrier is small" is grammatically correct and can be used in written English.
It can be used to describe a physical or metaphorical barrier that is not very large or significant. Example: "Despite some initial setbacks, we were able to overcome the barrier is small and complete the project within the given time frame."
The initiating energy barrier is small which ambient thermal stimulation or quantum tunneling can accomplish.
However, because the thickness of the central photonic barrier is small, the electromagnetic fields of these degenerate states overlap with one another, causing the bound states to split into symmetric and anti-symmetric pairs [17].
This is to be expected, as when the photonic wells are close to one another (or equivalently when the width of the central photonic barrier is small), the overlap between electromagnetic fields of the degenerate bound states is stronger, which corresponds to a higher degree of energy splitting for those states.
