To overcome recruitment barriers interventions, that are affordable for both industry- and investigator-driven trials, need to be developed and tested in randomized trials.
A simple cost-effective barriers intervention designed to reach a large number of persons with cancer has not yet been tested.
The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy and the cost effectiveness of a tailored barriers intervention (TBI), an educational intervention tailored to participants' attitudinal barriers toward reporting pain and using analgesics.
However, the phone contact by an educator cognizant of patient's age-related barriers (intervention group) showed the additional benefit of maintaining functionality during the intervention period.
The programme focused on interpersonal skills, providing information about disability, recognition of health and social barriers, intervention when crisis occurred, cultural sensitivity, community liaison skills and realistic expectations.
