In a symbiotic partnership the plant then provides the bacteria in the nodules with shelter, oxygen, and food, and in return the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into substances that the plant needs for growth.
Today, bacteria "fix" nitrogen this way routinely.
So, these bacteria fix nitrogen from the air and provide this nitrogen to plants in the form of ammonium ions or other nitrogenous compounds essential for growth.
This large variation in 13C is ascribed to the different assimilation pathways used by these photoautotrophs in synthesizing these pigments: purple sulfur bacteria fix CO2 via the C3 carboxylation pathway catalyzed by RubisCO, whereas green sulfur bacteria use the reverse tricarboxylic acid cycle catalyzed by α-ketoglutarate synthase.
