The three nitrogen conversion pathways traditionally used for the removal of ammonia nitrogen in aquaculture systems are photoautotrophic removal by algae, autotrophic bacterial conversion of ammonia nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen, and heterotrophic bacterial conversion of ammonia nitrogen directly to microbial biomass.
