Brucella ovis was initially recognized in the beginning of the 1950's in New Zealand and Australia as a bacterial agent associated with epididymitis and abortion in sheep [8].
A Blast nucleotide search (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast) of the Marion Island mouse kidney sequence (which has been submitted to Genbank under accession number EU626397) revealed the closest cultured bacterial match to be S. sanguinis (Genbank entry EU189961), a bacterial agent associated with infective endocarditis in humans [35] and for which male-bias has been reported [36], [37].
In agreement with recent studies, S. pneumoniae was the most common bacterial agent associated with coinfections, and a copathogen was found in more than one-half of the cases with the majority of pathogens being viral agents [ 11, 12, 14, 41], usually influenza viruses or rhinovirus.

Further, compared to studies in occupational and farming environments where high loads and concentrations of airborne fungal and bacterial agents were associated with respiratory symptoms [ 33, 40, 41], our study provided insights on the consequences of moderate measured fungal and bacterial concentrations in home environments.
