In this chapter, we provide an overview of studies that have advanced our knowledge of bacterial adaptation to aromatic compounds.
As shown in Fig. 1D, the wild-type strain displayed a considerably increased lag phase (by 2.3 h) during 'recovery' growth compared to 'pre-starvation' growth, which is characteristic of bacterial adaptation to the new growth environment.
Their analyses reveal a complex and dynamic evolutionary process of long-term bacterial adaptation in this controlled environment, and include findings on clonal inference, genetic drift and shifting targets of selection.
