Indeed, most of the amino acid residues that are distinct in Deinococcus and could be responsible for the structural and functional differences between the RecA proteins of Deinococcus and other bacteria are also present in the RecA sequence of Thermus (Figure S8).
To check whether such bacteria are also present in Italian I. ricinus, we studied specimens from three regions.
However, we found that most of the BV-associated bacteria were also present in women without BV, and therefore, qualitative detection could not be used for diagnostic purposes.
In addition, B. henselae bacteria were also present within molted ticks in sufficient numbers to cause bacteremia when tick salivary gland extracts were inoculated intravenously into domestic cats.
We conclude that although rRNA from reactive arthritis associated organisms can be detected in affected joints, bacterial RNA from many other bacteria is also present, as was previously noted in studies of other forms of inflammatory arthropathy.
However, research should be conducted to verify if they would also be active against Gram-negative bacteria if chelators that perturb the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria were also present.
All of the bacteria detected by cultivation, excepting K. pneumoniae, were also detected in the clone libraries, however in all cases a large number of other bacteria were also present.
Although biopsy clearly demonstrated invasive actinomycosis, our patient had malodorous, purulent drainage from her mandible, suggesting that anaerobes or pyogenic bacteria were also present, which was confirmed by culture (table 1).
