The phrase "backward of" is not technically correct in written English, though it may be used in certain regional dialects. As such, it is probably not the best choice of words to use when writing for a wide audience. Instead, you can use phrases such as "behind," "prior to," or "in the past." For example: We moved backward of the old house and settled by the river.
