To investigate the presence of a congruency effect and its origin, we performed, for each comparison task separately, a repeated measures ANOVA with contrast sign manipulation (stimuli brighter or darker than the background), instruction manipulation (numerically larger/smaller stimuli; darker/brighter stimuli), and congruency (neutral, congruent, incongruent) as within-subjects variables.
