Also shown are the background earthquakes (black dots) during January 1984 through June 2016.
The model considers that the earthquake sequence comprises aftershocks (events triggered by other earthquakes) and background earthquakes (events that occur independent of other earthquakes).
The aftershocks are triggered because of internal stress adjustments in the seismogenic system initiated by the occurrence of an earthquake, while the background earthquakes are generally caused by forces related to plate tectonics.
In this study, we used the nearest-neighbor distance method (Baiesi and Paczuski 2004; Zaliapin and Ben-Zion 2013), which can clearly and objectively distinguish the clustered and background earthquakes.
They tested six source models obtained from seismic, geodetic, and tsunami observations, and showed that there was a significant gain in positively-stressed aftershock mechanisms over that for the background earthquakes.
For the background earthquakes, we restricted our search area and depths to the same range as the aftershocks and sought a dataset about five times larger than the aftershocks for statistical confidence; we used 840 M ≥ 4.5 NIED F-net focal mechanisms during 17 February 1997 10 March 2011 (Fig. 1(b)).

In their tomographic inversions, they used many data from aftershocks in addition to the background earthquake data, which enabled precise imaging of the source area within the slab.
In the regions in which lack of information does not allow for delineation of potential seismic sources, and even in areas where active faults are defined, it is necessary to model background earthquake (background seismicity).
An application to data from Hikurangi margin (New Zealand) is presented where the observed earthquake sequence near Gisborne is analyzed to find instances of increased background rate (earthquake swarms).
For the Tohoku-Oki earthquake, Toda et al. (2011) showed that there is a mean 47% gain in positively stressed aftershock mechanisms over background (1997 2011 March 10) earthquakes.
