"back column" is a correct and usable phrase in written English.
It can be used to refer to the section of a group or formation that is located at the rear or back of a line or group. It can also refer to a physical column or support structure at the back of a building or structure. Example: The soldiers in the back column marched at a slower pace, keeping an eye out for any potential threats behind them. Another example: The fire in the building was contained in the back column, sparing the front part of the structure.
Maureen Dowd says the Clintons are "breaking the rules" by "shopping for a lavish home in Washington's fanciest neighborhoods" ("He's Gone! He's Back!," column, Dec. 20).
