The phrase "awkward book" is grammatically correct and can be used in written English.
It can be used to describe a book that is uncomfortable, clumsy, or difficult to read. Here is an example: "I tried to read the new novel, but the awkward plot and stilted dialogue made it nearly impossible to finish."
Flipping through a hardcover might form an instant but awkward book club of strangers.
