The phrase "aware of the expression" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when discussing someone's knowledge or recognition of a particular phrase or saying.
Example: "She was aware of the expression 'time flies' and often used it to describe her busy schedule."
Alternatives: "conscious of the phrase" or "familiar with the saying."
