More than 50% of the CRC etiology has been attributed to diet and lifestyle [ 1, 3] and, therefore, may be potentially avoidable by modification of these factors [ 4].
2 Suspected or established risk factors include diet, obesity, physical inactivity, diabetes mellitus, smoking, family history of CRC, and inflammatory bowel disease. 1 More than 50% of the aetiology has been attributed to diet and lifestyle 1, 3, and, may therefore be potentially avoidable by modification of these factors.
This situation appears to be avoidable by minor modifications to the operative technique, and it appears that it can be treated conservatively in most patients.
In a 1981 review, Doll and Peto estimated that approximately 35% of cancer deaths in the United States were potentially avoidable by the modification of diet but that this percentage might be as low as 10% or as high as 70%.
It is a busy unit with some environmental noise origins but also a high density of staff and relatives, so with this in mind we are developing a project plan to enable us to explore the current levels of noise and its sources, identify those sources that are avoidable or open to modification and enable staff to consider their role and responsibility in relation to noise reduction.
