Peggy Gilligan, the associate administrator for aviation safety at the F.A.A., said that General Electric Aircraft Engines has taken the lead in a government and industry program, which began this weekend, to assess the ability of jet engines to operate with ash.
Margaret Gilligan, the FAA's associate administrator for aviation safety, said an advisory panel is developing standards for detect-and-avoid technology and radio controls, which are expected in 2016.
"Airlines would like to ensure that the F.A.A. is able to demonstrate they can deliver the promised benefits of NextGen, especially from projects in which airlines have already equipped planes," said Ms. Pinkerton, a former F.A.A. assistant administrator for aviation policy, planning and environment.
