The phrase "average variance of" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used in statistical contexts when discussing the mean of the variances of a set of data points or variables.
Example: "To assess the consistency of the data, we calculated the average variance of the sample measurements."
Alternatives: "mean variance of" or "typical variance of".
