Using two different TBM designs (averaging individual differences versus aligning group average templates), we compared the anatomical distribution of brain atrophy in 40 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), 40 healthy elderly controls, and 40 individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), a condition conferring increased risk for AD.

We compared the consistency of brain shape and size between the original brain images to four different types of average templates including the nationality-appropriate child templates, nationality-inappropriate child template, Chinese56 adult template, and the US20 24 adult template.
Chinese age-specific MRI average templates were constructed with the iterative routines used in Sanchez et al. (2012a, b); also see Fonov et al. (2011), Yoon et al. (2009), and Guimond et al. (2000), for examples of similar iterative routine).

After producing the average template, mean DTI data was transformed from average template by using the AFNI software.
At last, tensors after the above processing were combined to produce a final average template with characteristics of all subjects.
The segmented images were visually inspected by a team of two experts and, then, imported to DARTEL for warping procedure, and finally iteratively aligned to the average template.
